In
simple terms, radio frequency identification (RFID)
technology involves the use of small radio tags that
are able to communicate with a networked device known
as a reader. These tags, which vary in size, price,
and capability, consist of a digital memory chip and
a transponder. They are affixed to, or embedded within,
a wide range of items that manufacturers, retailers,
and other parties wish to track. Much more than mere
tracking devices, RFID tags contain actual data that
is transmitted back to the reader. This data may include
serial numbers and other specifications, such as the
date and time that a product was manufactured or purchased.
