Biotechnology Outlook

We have a neutral fundamental outlook on the biotechnology industry, due to what we see as a lack of major catalysts over the next 12 months, as well as uncertainties overhanging some of the more visible names in the group. We also think that the overall industry pipeline is making less progress than we would like to see heading into the end of 2006. Negative sentiment associated with a more conservative FDA has also contributed to the group's underperformance this year, in our view.

The governor-elect has reassured biotechnology executives by saying he supports embryonic stem-cell research, and wants to finance it with state bonds. Mitt Romney opposed embryonic research. So far Patrick hasn't offered specifics about the bonds, except to say that research money would be reserved chiefly for public universities, not private industry.
